MarketDial champions all retailers who test. And, while we undoubtedly want retailers to design their in-store tests on our app, we believe anyone conducting tests deserves a shout-out. Join us each quarter as we raise a toast to some of the remarkable initiatives being tested by diverse retail organizations, many of whom are not our clients (yet) but have earned our respect — and a shout-out!

7-Eleven experiments with larger stores in Japan

Believing that a broader selection will attract a broader customer base, 7-Eleven is testing its hypothesis in Chiba prefecture, Japan. Featuring 2000+ additional products, including a variety of foods and household goods, the retailer hopes to appeal to younger shoppers, women, and families. If successful, 7-Eleven will open a second larger retail store within the year. In-store A/B testing can help with such endeavors by providing insights into cannibalization, competition, and customer response to change.

Moss piloting AI-powered virtual try on

Need to know what clothing will look like on you without the hassle of trying it on? Moss, a men’s fashion retailer in the UK is now testing to know how consumers will respond to that opportunity. With the power of AI from Anthropics Technology, consumers will have the chance to virtually try on clothing simply by inputting measurements and uploading a headshot.

Currys and WelcoMe pilot in-store accessibility

It is one thing to try to anticipate what a person with disabilities needs, it is another to ask them and then accommodate their request. Currys understands this difference and is, therefore, piloting a web app, WelcoMe, that allows shoppers with disabilities to notify stores of their needs in advance, providing an estimated arrival time to allow the store time to prepare accommodations.

Lidl tests out bottle return initiative

Hoping to reduce waste, Lidl is adding vending machines to all 21 of its stores where customers can return their eligible recyclable containers and earn $0.06 per container that either can be redeemed during shopping or donated to a children’s charity. The venture is expected to lead to over 10t of recycling, with plans to expand recycling opportunities in stores.

KFC testing a twist on the Twister

The KFC menu is getting a new twist, the Twister has returned, featuring both classic and spicy chicken options in a toasted tortilla along with all the great fixings–lettuce, tomatoes, and pepper mayor sauce. The menu item has not been on the menu for almost ten years but is back by popular demand.
