A toast to testing: September 2023

MarketDial champions all retailers who test. And, while we undoubtedly want retailers to test with us, we believe anyone conducting tests deserves a shout out. Join us each month as we raise a toast to some of the remarkable initiatives being tested by diverse retail organizations.

Subway tests out blimp restaurant

For years now, blimps have primarily been used for marriage proposals and advertising. Subway is hoping to change that. The Subway in the Sky machine is now offering just that–a sandwich in flight, with 30-minute rides that allow customers to sample Deli Hero subs.

Big Lots tests new home furnishings format

The discount retailer Big Lots has big plans for more discounts: home furnishings. Big Lots Home stores hopes to offer lower prices up to 60% on a variety of home goods, including furniture. It will currently be opening ten stores in October to pilot the new format.

Walmart pilots a pet services center

Hoping to take the “one-stop shop” concept to the next level, Walmart is now introducing services for Fido. Pet owners in pilot stores in Georgia will now have access to basic pet care and grooming solutions. The centers will have separate entrance for all animals — not just service animals — to be allowed in for wellness exams, vaccinations, baths, teeth cleaning, nail trims and more.

Otrium and Bleckman test out garment refurbishment and repair

Otrium, an online fashion retailer leading dedicated to keeping clothing out of landfills has partnered with Bleckman to launch a partnership focused on garment repair. The two will work in tandem to refurbish damaged, returned clothing for resale.

Dominion Energy tests new battery

Anticipating that metal lithium will be in high demand for electric vehicle batteries, Dominion Energy is exploring new ways to power up, testing two different types of batteries with the potential to power the system for approximately 100 hours. What is truly unique about one of these tests is its reliance on rust to generate power. As Form Energy notes, “The active components of our iron-air battery system are some of the safest, cheapest, and most abundant materials on the planet — low-cost iron, water, and air.”
