Tesco tech goes scan-free

Always on the lookout for ways to simplify the checkout experience, the British grocery giant Tesco is testing out technology that enables scan-free self-service checkout. All that customers need to do is to walk up to a kiosk with their items. The screen then displays the list of items they’ve picked for their review. While no app is needed for scan-free checkout, Tesco is also piloting a checkout-free app in three other stores in London and Birmingham where customers can simply scan items on their app and leave.

Crocs pilots shoe repurposing

Don’t throw out that old pair of Crocs! The retailer is testing out a takeback program, enabling shoppers to return old Crocs in any condition. The company will then repurpose the shoes, donating them to Soles4Souls or upcycling them into new shoes. In exchange for their donation, participating customers will receive a free Crocs-Saver, limited-edition Jibbitz.

Target tests 10-item max for self checkout

In its continued efforts to improve checkout wait times and potentially curb theft, Target is testing to learn how customers will respond if limited to only 10 items at self-checkout. Self-checkout efficacy has fallen under scrutiny in recent months with some retailers such as Wegmens  scrapping self-checkout all together. Targets approach works towards a happy medium where shoppers still have the convenience of self-checkout but in a more streamlined and controlled manner.

Chick-fil-A testing drone delivery

Who says chickens can’t fly? With tests on a new drone delivery underway, chicken sandwiches may soon be in flight across the town of Brandon, Florida. To get the special Chick-fil-A delivery, customers simply select the option from the app during the ordering process.
